Julius Shirima founded Darecha, a Tanzanian micro-venture capital fund, while still in high school. Darecha helps young people transform their business ideas into profitable ventures with training and accessible financing.
The model appears to be working; Darecha now counts more tan 5,000 young people in its network and has helped many launch successful businesses.
He attended Kibaha Secondary School where upon graduating in 2007, he emerged as one of the top students in Tanzania. In 2008, Julius was selected as one of the 106 young leaders from across Africa to join the inaugural class at African Leadership Academy (ALA), a unique institution that aims at developing the next generation of African leaders situated in Johannesburg, South Africa. At ALA, Julius excelled in Entrepreneurship and Leadership studies.
While at school, Julius founded several projects and student-run businesses such as Duka Bora (the school’s retail shop), Eco-solutions Group, Grow Green Itsuseng (community homestead gardens project) and DARECHA. Due to his commitment in supporting young entrepreneurs, Julius has received several entrepreneurship awards such as the Best Student in Entrepreneurship Award from both African Leadership Academy and the University of Tehran. Passionate about entrepreneurship and its role in the transformation of Africa’s fortunes, Julius is committed in helping his fellow youth to follow the entrepreneurial path.
In January 2011, Julius was offered a scholarship to further his business and entrepreneurship knowledge at the College of Wooster in USA.
Julius also addressed World Economic Forum on Africa in May 2011.Julius is an APEX 2013 Fellow at the College Of Wooster,USA. He worked for the Equity Bank Tanzania where he works closely with small scale entrepreneurs (Young Entrepreneurs) to address their needs. He is also running a project to find out the level of satisfaction among university students in Tanzania with educational services provided at their institutions.This project will push for these academic institutions to improve the quality of their services.He has worked for Coca-Cola Tanzania in implementing several marketing projects.
Julius is the winner of the Pan Commonwealth Youth Award Excellence in Development Work 2015.
